Chapter Twenty-One
After dinner, there was a brief ceremony inducting the four new members into the organization. Then dancing commenced and Jennifer took a spin around the floor with both William and Michael. Michael was the more pleasant as far as she was concerned.
âJorja is very independent,â Michael said as they waltzed. âIâve never seen her heel for anyone.â
Jennifer gave him a curious look. âShe didnât,â she said carefully.
âOh, she certainly backed down faster than sheâs ever done with any woman.â He frowned. âDo you think she has a drinking problem?â
âIâm probably just overreacting because my mother has a drinking problem.â
âI see,â he said quietly. âYou had a difficult childhood.â
âTo say the least,â Jennifer admitted. âBut Iâm not with Jorja for her money.â
âI imagine not,â he said with a little smile. âIf you were, you wouldnât be concerned about how much she may be drinking. In fact, the drunker the better for you, since in that state youâd be more likely to gain access to her finances.â
She gave him a tentative smile. âIâm just using her for the sex.â
âSâplease donât,â he said and she chuckled at the horror on his face. âI donât want to know that,â Michael told her. âIâm having a hard enough time accepting that she is gay and, instead of taking her lover out for a drink to threaten to beat him within an inch of his life if he hurts her, Iâm dancing with her.â
âI donât want to hurt her,â Jennifer said softly. âI just want to love her, but Jorja has all the signs of being a stubborn butch.â
He groaned again. âWhat does that mean?â
âThat Jorjaâs as hard-headed as any man.â
âI was afraid of that,â Michael said as the song came to an end. âMy secretary is coming back Monday, but my wife needs a personal assistant. She runs a shelter, and she does lots of charity work in connection with our business.â
âDonât tell me. Her last secretary quit?â
He cocked a brow at her. âThe job pays. Itâs modest, but it keeps you independent.â
âIâd be happy to work with her, she said. âI did that kind of thing on a small scale for my last boss.â
âJorja mentioned that today,â Michael said. âYouâll start Monday. Jorja can show you Sadieâs offices.â
âThank you.â
âDonât thank me. Iâm not sure youâre right for Jorjaâyouâre everything I never wanted for her. This is just for the opportunity to get to know you,â Michael admitted as the song came to an end and he led her from the dance floor.
Jennifer sighed. She might be needing something stronger if the night lasted much longer.
âGrandma, itâs not like Iâm forcing him to be late,â Jorja was saying as they approached their table.
âAll Iâm suggesting is you take him under your wing,â Sadie said. âAnd teach him.â
Jorja sighed. âHeâs not going to listen to me. Heâd be better off with Anthony since Anthony is a little older.â
âIf thatâs the case, then you should start training Willow or Allen,â Jessica suggested, mentioning her own twins.
Jennifer saw the tension in Jorjaâs face and immediately pushed aside Michaelâs statement.
